Cystadenomas develop from abnormal tissue growth on the ovaries. They occur between the ages of 20 and 50 but most commonly in women in their 30s and 40s.
Cystadenomas usually present no symptoms until they reach a size that results in weight gain and abdominal bloating.
If the cystadenoma contains a watery liquid it is called a serous cystadenoma. These cysts can grow to two and six inches in diameter. If the cystadenoma contains a thick, gelatinous material it is called a mucinous cystadenoma. These can grow from six to twelve inches in diameter.
Cystadenomas are normally benign but do have the potential to become cancerous. Even if benign, complications can arise if they twist, bleed or rupture or if they grow large enough to disturb the normal functioning of the surrounding organs in the abdomen.
Cystadenomas need never grow to excessive sizes if they are detected early by a gynecologist during a routine examination.
