Unlike a lot of other health problems, it’s very difficult to reliably diagnose ovarian cysts from a simple list of symptoms. That’s because these symptoms can vary from person to person.
If the cysts are small and don’t affect the other parts of your body, you may not realize that you even have them. Other women may experience agonizing pain from out of the blue that results in an ambulance ride to the emergency room.
Ovarian cysts occur in different types and sizes and can manifest themselves in a large variety symptoms. To further complicate matters, there are many other conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease, endometriosis, ovarian cancer, diverticulitis, and appendicitis that share the same symptoms. That’s why you should see your doctor to get a definite diagnosis if you find that you have any of the symptoms discussed here.
Ovarian cyst symptoms:
1.) No symptoms at all.
Very often, ovarian cysts won’t produce any symptoms. These “silent” cysts are usually discovered by chance during a routine physical exam. If there is a high occurrence of ovarian cysts in your family or if you’ve had them in the past, getting regular pelvic examinations and pap smears are important. Further occurrence of ovarian cysts is highly likely if you’ve had them before.
2.) Pain in the pelvic or abdominal area.
Depending on the size of the cyst, you may experience varying degrees of pain or a feeling of fullness, heaviness, or pressure. This pain can be caused by a large cyst pressing against an adjacent organ. The cyst can become twisted which may restrict normal blood flow resulting in pain. If the cyst ruptures, symptoms such as intense pain, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting can result. Get medical care if these are your symptoms.
3.) Pain while urinating or during bowel movements.
This can happen when a cyst is pressing against the bladder or rectum. Often, an increase in going to the bathroom will result. An inability to fully empty the bladder may also occur.
4.) Menstrual period irregularities.
5.) Pain during the menstrual period or abnormal uterine bleeding.
6.) Painful sexual intercourse.
7.) An increase in weight in the abdomen or a feeling of fullness there.
8.) Symptoms can sometimes mimic those of pregnancy.
These include vomiting, fever, breast tenderness, and nausea. If these are your symptoms, get medical care immediately.
9.) A pain radiating out from the pelvic area to the thighs and lower back.
This is either a dull constant pain or intermittent.
10.) Infertility.
Ovarian cysts don’t usually cause infertility but it can happen.
11.) Increased facial or body hair.
This may indicate Poly cystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS).
12.) Fatigue.
13.) Symptoms requiring immediate medical attention:
-rapid breathing
-sudden severe pain in the pelvic or abdominal areas
-dizziness, faintness, or weakness
-vomiting, fever, or nausea
